What to do in Merida's historic downtown?

Explore the cultural richness of Mérida: A unique guide to experiences in its historic center.

In 2011, the UN named Mérida the city of peace due to the security that can be breathed in its streets, so in Künük Hotel Boutique we recommend that if you want to visit the beautiful city of Mérida do it staying in the hotels in the historic center in Mérida because this way you can wander through the streets of the old colonial neighborhoods without worrying about parking and feel safe for the ride.

Staying in Mérida's historic center.

The best area to stay is in the historic center, where many boutique hotels in Mérida exist. Besides the location of the historic center is privileged to know those corners where the white city was settled.

Künük boutique hotel is located near the neighborhood of Santiago, one of the most emblematic of the city of Mérida. Here you can find markets with fresh fruits and a diverse gastronomic offer. You can enjoy a unique stroll through its streets to delight yourself with the exquisite colonial architecture of the historic center.

What to see in the historic center of Mérida?

The benefit of staying in Mérida's historic downtown hotels is the ease of getting around the center without spending many hours in a vehicle.

These are some of the attractions you can enjoy during your stay in the city of Merida:

Government Palace.

Before using the building as the Government Palace; it was the seat of the old royal houses where the high command of the Yucatecan rulers was located.

The style of the palace is an eclectic classicist, and its façade shows a replica of the church bell of the town of Dolores, which the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang to summon the people to fight for independence.

Inside is a large central courtyard and a beautiful stone quarry staircase.

Montejo House.

The Montejo House was built between 1543 and 1549. Its architectural style is plateresque; that is to say, it combined three artistic currents: Gothic, Renaissance, and Muslim. They used stones from the ancient Mayan temple that crowned the largest of T-ho hills for its construction.

Cathedral of San Ildefonso.

It is one of the first cathedrals built in continental Latin America; its facade is sober with a Renaissance style where the door of forgiveness stands out, with a semicircular arch framed by even columns on the sides; in the middle of them, you can see two images of St. Peter and St. Paul. On one side of the cathedral is the passage of the revolution.

MACAY Museum.

In the center, you can also find the Ateneo de Yucatán Museum of Contemporary Art, the only museum in the entire Yucatan peninsula dedicated to the diffusion of modern and contemporary art.

This museum offers workshops and courses. You can also enjoy the exquisite colonial architecture of the museum. It gives the feeling that we are in another era, and the photos in the historical center of Mérida are incredible.

Olimpo Cultural Center.

In the Olimpo Cultural Center, you can enjoy a recreational space where it is possible to enjoy different artistic and cultural manifestations.

The architectural style of the building is contemporary; in fact, it was inaugurated on January 6, 1999, to celebrate the 457th anniversary of the founding of the city of Mérida.

The Santiago neighborhood is emblematic due to its colonial architecture.

Santiago Neighborhood.

The Santiago neighborhood is one of the oldest areas of Mérida. It is located to the west-north of the Plaza Grande. Here you can find the modest sanctuary with a baroque statue of Santiago.

The Santiago neighborhood is a place to get lost walking through its streets, where you can find markets and the best restaurants and stores. It has a playground with a beautiful water fountain surrounded by trees. Santiago Park is transformed into a live music venue on Tuesday nights.

This neighborhood has many restored colonial houses, making your tour a trip to the past. In this area, you will find the Hotel Künük, one of the best hotels in Mérida.
