10 things to do in Mérida

Marvel at the charm of the White City

2022-12-26 | merida

Mérida has an extensive offer of tourist attractions. No matter how long you stay in Mérida Hotels, marveling at all the white city offers will not be enough. In this article, we will share 10 things you can do between the city and nature because nature tourism is another of the advantages of visiting this beautiful Yucatecan city.

1. Plaza grande.

In the heart of the city, you will find the Plaza Grande, one of the must-see places in the city, where you will find the most important buildings, such as:

  • Montejo's house.
  • The Cathedral of San Ildefonso.
  • The Macay Museum.
  • The passage of the revolution.
  • Government Palace.

2. Montejo House.

Once you are in the Plaza Grande, visiting Casa Montejo is a must. Its importance in Mérida is because it is the oldest house in the city; in fact, it was built for the family of Francisco Montejo, the city's founder.

However, it should be noted that only the entrance remains of the original construction, so it is a pleasure to enjoy its architectural details and the museum you will find inside.

3. San Ildefonso Cathedral.

If you love history, make the most of your stay at the Mérida Hotels by visiting the oldest cathedral in Mexico. The Cathedral of San Ildefonso was built with the remains of a Mayan temple. It is also a building full of history, as it has been partially destroyed and looted throughout history. It is also home to the world's most prominent interior statue of Christ.

4. Macay Museum.

Museo Macay houses modern and contemporary artworks and has a beautiful interior courtyard full of plants. It is a magical place within Mérida, perfect for disconnecting and reconnecting with nature.

5. The Juan Gamboa Art Gallery.

In this museum, you can find works from the Viceregal period. It also has temporary exhibits and a room dedicated to the most important Yucatecan painter of the 19th century, Gamboa Guzmán.

6. Santa Lucia Park.

You will find good restaurants with terraces and live music in this park. On Thursdays, at 9 p.m., they celebrate the traditional Yucatecan serenade, an excellent opportunity to learn folk music while enjoying the city's gastronomy. This plaza is also a place where artisans often exhibit their products.

7. The Canton Palace.

This magnificent building is the home of the Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatan, making it the perfect plan for all Mérida Hotels guests interested in learning about the history of our pre-colonial past.

8. Sabacché Tecoh cabins and cenotes.

To make the most of your stay in Mérida hotels, such as Künük, visit the Cenotes Sabacché ecotourism center. This is located about 60 kilometers south of Mérida. In this center, you will find the Calcuch and Tanimax cenotes, where you can swim or enjoy the beautiful views of the Yucatan cenotes.

9. Tumbel Zazil Kin.

About 49 kilometers from Mérida is the ecotourism center Tumbel Zazil Kin. It is made up of two cenotes. The first, called X'Bantún, is an open-air cenote about 6 meters deep and full of fish. The second, called Dzoncabal, is located in the earth's bowels, where you can observe how the root of an old Ceiba tree descends to its waters, a truly spectacular sight.

10. Loltún Caves.

These caves are perfect for history and geology lovers. In addition to incredible natural formations, these caves are home to 145 wall paintings and 42 petroglyphs dating back to 9000 BC. The tour begins at the Nabab entrance, where you will see the famous bas-relief of the Warrior of Loltun, depicting a warrior who appears to be emerging from the grotto.
